Category: Carbon Fiber Hoods

Seibon has just released the new TM style carbon fiber hood, just ahead of the 2013 SEMA show in Las Vegas. The TM carbon fiber hood features the standard high grade carbon fiber Seibon is known for and is finished with a high grade polyurethane gloss clear coat for protection and shine. Its design features dual side heat release vents to allow hot air to escape the engine bay. This is a bold and stylish design that keeps drag to a minimum while providing heat extraction functionality.

VIS Racing, a US company that produces an enormous lineup of exterior styling accessories including body kits, carbon fiber hoods, carbon trunks and spoiler; has introduced a new vented hood for the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. VIS is one of the longest running and most successful manufacturers in the industry and has been supplying cutting edge products for the tuning scene for well over  a decade. Many of the products and body kits featured in the first “Fast and the Furious” movie were produced by VIS Racing. So far, VIS has a TRD replica kit for the Scion FR-S and and Subaru BRZ as well as an OEM Carbon Fiber Hood and Pro Line Carbon Fiber Spoiler.

The “AMS” Style Carbon Fiber Hood: The “AMS” Style comes from a similar design from Japanese parts manufacturer “Amuse”, which created a vented hood of this style for the Nissan 350Z a few years back. VIS then used the slatted venting design and began incorporating this style into many of the more recent tuner cars including the Nissan 370Z, Honda CRZ, Nissan Altima and Hyundai Genesis. This design has been one of the most popular among several classic hood styles such as the Invader, OEM and Tracer style hoods, the main feature is an aggressive styling that looks at home on a two door sports coupe such as the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. The vents on the AMS style carbon fiber hood are functional and will allow cooler air to enter the engine bay while circulating hot air out. This is particularly beneficial during higher temperature climates or under race and track conditions.

Scion_FRS_AMS_Carbon_Fiber_Hood_by_VIS_3

Features of VIS Carbon Fiber Hoods: VIS has been in the industry a long time and only Seibon seems to have a foothold in the carbon market equal to that of VIS. The product quality is about the same for both manufacturers, and with the high specialty in the carbon market, these two manufacturers are able to put out top level quality at mid range pricing. Each manufacturer offers similar designs but they now tend to be unique to their brands. Seibon’s TS hood would be the equivalent of the VIS AMS, with slatted vents on each side of the hood, though the VIS hoods are a bit more angular and aggressive looking.

The construction of the carbon hood is made with a classic 1×1 weave overlaid upon an FRP support structure, then the resins are hardened and the hood skin is mounted to a smooth FRP underbody support. After that the hood utilizes a polyurethane clear coat similar to that found on your vehicles paint job, and provides the hood with a show quality glossy finish. Maintaining the hoods clear coat is to be done just like the rest of the vehicle, keep away from harsh chemicals or drive through car wash and use a mild wax.

Seibon “CSL” Carbon Fiber Trunk (Photo: Jordan Mo Photography).

At the 2012 SEMA show in Las Vegas we got a glimpse of the large variety of carbon fiber products put forth for the Toyota 86, Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S. Seibon has been a top manufacturer of high end carbon fiber and dry carbon fiber race products since 2003 and the latest line of gear for the Scion FR-S is exceptional. We are proud to bring you an in depth photo gallery and review of the Seibon “CSL Style carobn fiber trunk.

Scion_FRS_CSL_Carbon_Fiber_Trunk_Seibon_2

What is a “CSL” style trunk? About a decade ago in Europe, BMW released what was called the M3 CSL, a higher performance version of the M3 that we saw here in the US. The BMW M3 CSL featured a few unique styling enhancements over the standard M3, one was the front bumper with a single side intake hole and the other significant difference was the trunk that featured a curved lip on the corner of the trunk which acted as an integrated rear spoiler. The design was so simple yet revolutionary, build a spoiler into the trunk and eliminate the standard lines. Form follows function with the CSL style trunk.

Scion_FRS_CSL_Carbon_Fiber_Trunk_Seibon_3

This design then finally made its way to the United States with a few different applications for the BMW 3 series, then later with the newer E90-93 3 series, 5 series and 1 series. After this began a new trend with other vehicles such as the Scion TC with a duck bill integrated spoiler that resembled the CSL. It was only natural that this design would also find its way to the Scion FR-S, and Seibon took it upon themselves to create this in both wet laid and dry carbon fiber versions. For consumers, this means a strong reason to buy one product that would not only lighten up the vehicle but add some serious style while also eliminating the hassle and expense of purchasing an additional spoiler and drilling through the trunk.

Scion_FRS_CSL_Carbon_Fiber_Trunk_Seibon_1

The Seibon CSL Carbon Fiber Trunk reduces the weight of the vehicle by 3lbs over the stock trunk, which may not seem like a lot, but when you consider that the trunk also takes out the need for an additional 8-12lb spoiler while also increasing the vehicles down force, this is a bit more substantial than leads on. Additionally, the weight is taken off the top of the vehicle which means a better distribution for higher speed cornering. Under higher speeds, the air flow coming off the top of the vehicle will push down on the CSL integrated spoiler and add to the traction from the rear wheels. Of course the practical differences are minimal to most enthusiasts, but then again most enthusiasts are purchasing for show quality looks and any performance gains are an added bonus.

The Seibon CSL Carbon Fiber Trunk retails for $800 and is made in a traditional 1×1 carbon weave and finished with a gloss clear coat for protection and a show quality finish. You can see many of the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ’s on display at the 2012 SEMA show utilized the CSL Carbon Fiber Trunk. Care of the trunk requires washing and waxing just like the rest of your vehicle, avoid using chemicals or drive through car washes. The Seibon CSL carbon fiber trunk is covered by Seibon’s warranty which covers fitment issues and discoloration for 6 months.

Varis, one of Japans most elite tuning manufacturers has recently produced 3 unique styling packages for the Scion FR-S and Toyota 86, two of them are ground effects packages that bolt on to the existing body and one wide body version with aggressive and sweeping lines. All three packages were on display at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon and we bring you an in depth review and exclusive photo gallery of the latest products from Varis.

VARIS Body Kits for Scion FR-S, Toyota 86

Varis Arising I Body Kit for Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ

The Varis “Arising” 1 body styling package is a subtle add on lip kit that is designed to help accentuate the stock body lines and create a performance package that is both functional for street use, show use and the occasional track race. The complete Arising I line consists of a front bumper spoiler, right and left side skirts and right, left rear add ons. Optional accessories for the Varis Arising package include a front fender garnish, front grill and carbon GT wing. The complete kit and fender garnish are available in either a paintable FRP or carbon fiber with a gloss clear coat.

VARIS Body Kits for Scion FR-S, Toyota 86

The rear of the Varis Arising 1 body kit is minimalistic and unlike many of the high end tuning packages, this kit does not have a rear diffuser or full rear apron. Instead, what is being more and more common for the FR-S packages, is the use of two rear add ons for the right and left side that round out the rear and give it a little more depth. This kit utilizes the stock rear diffuser and can accomodate a stock or aftermarket exhaust.  The GT-Wing is more for street use and not designed for heavy down force on the track.

VARIS Body Kits for Scion FR-S, Toyota 86

This side view of the Varis Arising 1 body kit shows the low profile look that kindly accentuates the lines without dropping the vehicle too low. This is a great feature for casual tuning enthusiasts that are concerned with a kit that is too low.

VARIS Body Kits for Scion FR-S, Toyota 86

In this photo you can see the Varis Arising 1 front bumper spoiler, finished in a 1×1 carbon fiber weave. The lip spans the full width of the bumper from fender to fender. On each side the lip acts as a bumper canard as well and helps to direct air flow up above the wheel wells while also pushing the front down under higher speeds.

VARIS Body Kits for Scion FR-S, Toyota 86

The Varis Arising side skirts in gloss carbon fiber show the curvaceous lines that seem to echo the old Veilside swooping lines of the RX7 D1GT but in smaller form. This styling is pretty unique for Scion FR-S and Toyota 86 tuners who see a lot of ‘boxy’ style side skirts.

Here, the rear add ons are shown in carbon fiber. The shelf type lip protrudes outward but not excessively, and compliments the lips from the side skirts and front spoiler.

VARIS Body Kits for Scion FR-S, Toyota 86

The optional front grill for the Varis Arising kit is available in carbon fiber and FRP. This adds a nice styling touch to the front of the vehicle and adds some depth to the front bumper, not to mention ties in well with the carbon fiber front lip.

The Varis Arising Carbon GT Wing shown with metal brackets. According to the Varis website, the Arising GT Carbon Fiber wing is only for street use, we assume this is because it is not designed for high speed down force. This wing is available with metal brackets or an all carbon fiber version. For Scion FR-S tuners looking for a functional down force wing, we recommend the APR Performance GT-250 Carbon Fiber Wing which has been used on several drift and race FR-S including Ken Gushi’s Greddy FR-S.

Varis makes two different hoods (bonnet) for the Scion FR-S, Toyota 86. The first is the ‘Lightweight Bonnet’ which is acutally just an OEM (normal) style hood, as well as s ‘cooling’ bonnet with functional vents. The Varis hoods are made in three different materials, carbon fiber, dry carbon fiber and kevlar for the OEM and Kevlar, FRP and carbon fiber for the vented bonnet.

This photo shows the Varis Arising II body kit for the Scion FR-S, this kit features a full front replacement bumper instead of a front spoiler. This front will also fit on Subaru BRZ models. The Arising II is a toned down version of the Varis Widebody Kit for Scion FR-S and Toyota 86. The rear of the Arising II ustilizes a more track friendly rear diffuser and rear lip that is aerodynamically functional.

VARIS Body Kits for Scion FR-S, Toyota 86

The masterpeice of the Varis lineup for Toyota 86 and Scion FR-S is the wide body kit which takes the body design to new levels and builds upon the Arising II kit. In the front the bumepr adds both a front lip and carbon fiber splitter supported with two prop rods. The side skirts and widebody flares increase the stance of the vehicle substantially. The trailing edge of the front fenders and rear quarter panels reveal several slatted vents and curvaceous contours.

Daniel Song Scion FR-S GT from Scion 2012 SEMA Tuners Challenge

We are pleased to bring you an in depth review, modification list and photo gallery of the third place finisher in the 2012 Sema Tuners Challenge from Scion. The three entrants were given a Scion FR-S and a $15,000 budget to complete the most dynamic version of this vehicle and to be displayed at the SEMA show in early November in Las Vegas. The eventual winner of the competition was Chris Basselgia’s Minty Fresh Scion FR-S, followed by John Toca’s 5:AD Carbon Stealth and lastly but certainly not least was this black on black full on race car by Daniel Song.

Daniel Song Scion FR-S GT from Scion 2012 SEMA Tuners Challenge

As the Scion FR-S show cars from SEMA and Tokyo Auto Salon have started coming out, you will notice that this car can be styled in many ways, from the chic and avant garde styling of the Minty Fresh Scion FR-S, to the VIP and executive looking Wald Sports Line, to the racy Rocket Bunny Wide Body. Daniel Song’s Scion FR-S GT taunts the most hard core racers with its no business matte black and carbon design. The wheels are a throwback to the muscle car days, while the wide body fenders and flares as well as the carbon diffusers and spoilers have downforce written all over them.

Daniel Song Scion FR-S GT from Scion 2012 SEMA Tuners Challenge

The initial widebody design was done by graphic artist and car design legend Jonsibal. The initial mockups looked like something out of a video game, and only when the actual car made its debut could people really see how stunning this vehicle design was, with attention put into all of the details. Lately in the tuning scene you’ll notice a lot of matte black cars which have been wrapped with a vinyl covering instead of being completely painted. That is the case with the Daniel Song FR-S GT, but in addition to the matte look a carbon pattern was also added to the vinyl to give it a look of a dry carbon fiber vehicle from head to toe. For those who are not familiar with dry carbon, it is a high end manufacturing process that utilizes a unique method to compact carbon and harden the resins without the traditional fiberglass backing. Dry carbon typically is used on high end race cars and features a matte finish, and though this vehicle is not made of dry carbon it certainly looks like it.

Daniel Song Scion FR-S GT from Scion 2012 SEMA Tuners Challenge

When looking at the rear of the vehicle you can see that a custom dual exhaust system has been routed up the center of the rear bumper and is enclosed with a customized Difflow 5 element rear diffuser. The diffuser is a functional element that helps to wrap airflow coming from under the vehicle more efficently to the airflow coming around the sides and over the top.

Daniel Song Scion FR-S GT from Scion 2012 SEMA Tuners Challenge

On many vehicles during the 2012 SEMA show, Scion FR-S models were attached with APR performances new Scion FR-S GT-250 rear wing. As you can see on this vehicle a custom rear mounted airfoil utilizes the carbon fiber blade of the GT-250 wing but also utilizes upright stabilizers to help create down force under the highest speeds with a sturdy design. The rear tail lights have been blacked out with a film that matches the rest of the vehicle.

The cockpit of Daniel Song’s Scion FR-S is all business as well, showing off a Sparco Competition R345 suede steering wheel, Sparco Competition Circuit racing bucket seat and Sparco Competition 4-point race harness (red). A custom interior harness bar has been mounted to secure the seat harnesses and the door panels have been replaced by carbon fiber panels. Certain dash elements have been refinished in a matte black color to match the rest of the motif. On the floor of the vehicle you’ll see a Dimple-died aluminum floor mat by Garage Life.

Daniel Song Scion FR-S GT from Scion 2012 SEMA Tuners Challenge

The radio and headting and air conditioning panels have been deleted and replaced by carbon fiber panels. The standard ignition has been replaced by a push start ignition. A Sparco Racing Speed brushed silver aluminum shift knob and brushed silver Sparco Setanna e-brake matches the other cockpit products. Not shown in the photo is a Kidde Auto fire extinguisher and bracket.

Looking to the rear you can see a bare interior where the Garage Life integrated racing harness has been mounted. Exposed wires lend to the race only feel of the Daniel Song Scion FR-S GT, but also may prove to be an eye sore to those less concerned with all out track spec’d vehicle and more interested in the show quality that his two main competitors can put forth. It does make the case of some balance of form and function.

Daniel Song Scion FR-S GT from Scion 2012 SEMA Tuners Challenge

This photo on the floor of the SEMA show clearly gives a good view of the Jonsibal designed side skirt diffusers, front lip, bumper canards and front wind splitter. Heavy duty to say the least and capable of pushing this vehicle as low as possible during high speed track bouts. You can see the stock bumper has been used and the fenders and aerodynamic accessories accentuate this vehicle and give it a completely new look. Front and rear tow hooks with a red accent provide a functional and stylistic element on the black. Underneath the diffusing elements are MV Designz front lip, rear lip and side skirts.

Daniel Song Scion FR-S GT from Scion 2012 SEMA Tuners Challenge

From this angle you can see some of the detail work in the badges, hood and mirros. Daniel Song opted for the Scion FR-S Formula GT Race Carbon Fiber Mirrors brought to you by APR Racing. The front head lights, signal lights and fog lights have been blacked out with a transparent vinyl film as shown on the rear of the vehicle. On the hood you can see two Nissan GT-R inspired ports and closing the hood down are Aerocatch Flushmount Hood Pins. The Toyo Proxes 4 tires are rather large and mounted on 18″ SSR 3 piece Professor SP1 Wheels with a customized offset. This is a rather smaller wheel diameter when compared with the 19 and 20″ wheels commonly seen on show vehicles for this car, but bring back the muscle car era feel with the whitened out Toyo Logos.

As for suspension, of course this vehicle is running on Air Runner air suspension that gives the vehicle the ability to ride high or dropped down in the slammed position on the show floor. Brembo 4-piston Gran Turismo calipers and Brembo 345mm cross-drilled floating discs with stainless steel braided brake lines add stopping power. For reducing body roll under hard cornering, the Daniel Song Scion FR-S GT uses red Tanabe front and rear strut tower braces.

Daniel Song Scion FR-S GT from Scion 2012 SEMA Tuners Challenge

Under the hood of the car you can see the Vortech V-3 H67 Supercharger. The Daniel Song Scion FR-S GT uses a Clutch Master FX300 Stage 3 clutch and Clutch Master Flywheel. Other enhancements you will see under the hood include: Koyo Race radiator, Braille 15 lbs lightweight carbon fiber battery, Braille aluminum battery bracket kit and Billet Pro short shift kit.

Youll notice the drivers side headlight has been customized to route air into the intake system, this is a very nice touch that often gets overlooked or raises eyebrows without an explanation as to why it does this. The “Scion” and “86″ fender emblems have been blacked out giving an attractive trim to the matte carbon fiber vinyl trim. From this angle you can clearly see the four bumper canards that extend out from the stock bumper, as well as the MV Designz front lip and carbon fiber front splitter.

The Scion FR-S or Toyota 86 as it is known outside of the USA market, recieved a thorough reworking in the name of the Griffon TRD Concept that sheds 500lbs off the wieght of the vehicle and allows this naturally aspirated sports car the ability to dish out top end speed at a fraction of the cost of some of the vehicles it can surpass. One of those vehicles is the Ferarri 458 Italia that ran a 1:02.24 lap time at Tsukuba Circuit in Japan, while the Griffon TRD beat it by a slight margin at 1:01:872 on a naturally aspirated engine.

Scion FR-S, Toyota 86 Griffon Concept TRD

The Griffon TRD vehicle utilizes extensive carbon fiber to significantly increase power to weight ratio. This project car illustrates the functionality of carbon fiber products to replace stock parts and allow the vehicle to become more agile around the corners as well as getting up to speed at a quicker pace. It is suprising to hear that this vehicle can perform so well and do it without a turbo or supercharger. One thing to keep in mind, many of the carbon parts such as the hood, doors, fenders and trunk remove weight from the top and outsides of the vehicle which changes the balance of weight, shifting it to the lower portion of the vehicle and therefore allowing for better agility and traction.

Scion FR-S, Toyota 86 Griffon Concept TRD

In addition to utilizing carbon fiber, graphite bumpers and polycarbon windows replace the stock urethane bumpers and glass. Below is a list of exterior upgrades for the Griffon TRD Concept that have allowed such a significant weight reduction.

Scion FR-S Tuning Tip -

Many new tuners neglect to understand the importance of weight reduction as opposed to power increase via forced induction. Forced induction such as turbo and superchargers give a big boost in power, but the cost can be excessive as does the installation work, maintainance and warranty issues that must be addressed. For tuners who are seeking the most ‘bang for the buck’, look to bolt on modifications that enhance the vehicles power without voiding the warranty, things like intakes, exhausts and pair it with weight reducing parts such as carbon fiber hoods, trunks, fenders and spoilers such as the parts listed for this vehicle. The Grifton TRD Concept is an amazing performance machine built on a naturally aspirated platform, you could say the ultimate sleeper.

2 Crave Scion FR-S

If you were at the 2012 SEMA show and visited the 2 Crave wheel booth you likely saw a blacked out Scion FR-S shown in this gallery. This is one of my personal favorite Scion FR-S show cars out there with an all black theme, blacked out tail lights and headlights, carbon fiber hood and trunk accentuated with a carbon fiber lip kit. Here are the details on this stunning vehicle with the modification list and links to manufacturer websites as well as links on where to find these parts.

The wheels for this vehicle are 2 Cradle Mach4 19″ wheels in a black finish (19×8.5 front, 19×9 reaer). This vehicle also uses a Seibon DV style carbon fiber hood which features a dual vent system similar to the VS, but styled after some of the older drift style carbon fiber hoods made famous with the S15 and 240sx. The rear utilizes an OEM style carbon fiber trunk with no spoiler, leaving this vehicle looking very clean and sexy.

Injen SEMA Subaru BRZ

On display at the 2012 SEMA show in Las Vegas was the Injen Subaru BRZ, showcasing two of Injen’s performance products, thier cold air intake system and dual exhaust system. Injen is one of the top manufacturers of short ram and cold air intake systems and a main competitor of AEM, K&N and HKS. Injen is a North American company that boasts easy to install, bolt on performance parts for the industries top tuning vehicles.

The Injen intake system that fits on both the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ is available in either a polished or wrinkled black finish. The intake system utilizes a new style of cold air intake, instead of routing down into the front bumper and away from the engine bay, this style comes with an air box that helps to separate the filter from the rest of the engine compartment. At the front of the air box is an intake vent that brings cool air from the outside of the car and feeds it right into the filter for optimum results.

On display along with Injen’s intake and exhaust system are several exterior styling components that give this vehicle a stunning look. The Injen Subaru BRZ showcased two great carbon fiber products from Seibon, the FA style carbon fiber hood and an OEM style carbon fiber trunk. Seibon’s FA style carbon fiber hood features a similar look to some of it’s WRX offerings. The FA hood utilizes an STI style front hood scoop and slatted vented exhaust ports running up each side of the hood. The rear trunk is a carbon fiber version of the stock part but made with a high grade and light weight carbon fiber. The emblem paint matches the red of the vehicle which ties in well with the rest of the car and breaks up the carbon in the back.

APR performance added some functional downforce via the GT-250 carbon fiber rear wing and carbon fiber front splitter. The GT-250 wing has been seen on many of the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ’s at the SEMA show, being the predominant aerodynamic component of the many vehicles on display. The GT-250 wing is available in 61 and 67″ widths and is adjustable with a CNC machined set of powder coated support brackets. The carbon fiber front splitter mounts to the stock bumper, APR makes a splitter for both the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S. This part helps to push the vehicle down for better traction under high speeds and deep cornering.
